Psychotherapeutic Theories, Frameworks, and Modalities – NURS 753

This course provides an overview of theories, frameworks, modalities and best practices related to psychotherapeutic treatments and management of mental health disorders across the lifespan. The integration of the application of evidence-based psychotherapies and psychotherapeutic case formulation, treatment for the management of disorders, symptoms, and issues. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing will be integrated through a case-based learning experience.
This PMHNP course helps meet standards of graduate level nursing education as articulated by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essentials of Doctoral Education for Advanced Practice Nursing. This course meets standards of nurse practitioner education as articulated by the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF).

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Integrate the Christian worldview in the delivery of psychiatric mental healthcare to individuals and families (AACN Essentials VIII; NONPF 2017: Independent Practice 1–4; Ethics 1–3; LU PLO 1, 7).
- Apply theoretical underpinnings from nursing, psycho-social models, and population health assessment, including genetics and biological factors in the management of individuals and families, including health promotion and disease prevention of chronic and complex acute psychiatric mental health issues (AACN Essentials I, III, VII, VIII; NONPF 2017: Scientific Foundation Competencies 1–4; Health Delivery System Competencies 3–5, 7; Ethics Competencies 1–3; LU PLO 1, 3, 5–6).

WebEx Class Presentations (2)
Students will prepare a PowerPoint Presentation to lead a short WebEx discussion according to assigned module/week requirements. Each student will be provided 10 minutes to present his or her topic. Students will submit a PowerPoint slide presentation with title slide, 6–10 content slides, reference slide via Blackboard SafeAssign prior to the WebEx class. An additional 2–3 minutes may be used to answer questions. Further discussion can take place as time permits. Please see WebEx Grading Rubric.
Case Analysis Evaluation (3)
The student will analyze 2 case studies that focus on assessment, diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and treatment plan of chronic mental health symptom. Students should be able to apply knowledge of evidence-based psychotherapies and psychotherapeutic treatment for the management of the psychiatric mental health disorders. The use of at least 5 references is required in current APA format, which may include the course textbook. Please see the Case Analysis Grading Rubric.
Evidenced-Based Article Review
The student will review one evidenced based article based on assigned module. This assignment allows student to gain knowledge in the topic area. This assignment must be at least 2–3 pages of content and adhere to current APA format. A title page and reference page in current APA format are required. Mental Health Policy Paper
Students will research and identify a mental health bill and impact on PMHNP role.
This paper must be written in current APA format, be 4–6 pages (excluding the title page and reference page), and have at least 3 peer-reviewed references in addition to the course textbooks and the Bible. Please see the Mental Health Policy Grading Rubric.
Midterm and Final Exams
Exams will be proctored by Proctorio.
