Nursing Informatics: Data Management – NURS 635

CG • Section 8WK • 07/01/2018 to 12/31/2199 • Modified 02/09/2022

Course Description

This informatics course will provide graduate students the opportunity to design, appraise and modify data sets using data mining software. Management of data will be supported by nursing informatics framework to meet the scope and standards of practice for Nursing Informatics (ANA, 2015). Knowledge discovery through the data mining process will be applied to the final capstone project.

For information regarding prerequisites for this course, please refer to the Academic Course Catalog.

Rationale

This course will support the student’s knowledge of data discovery through the use of data set analysis and synthesis while incorporating theory and practice-related knowledge to Nursing Informatics. This course helps meet the standards of graduate-level nursing education as articulated by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and the American Nurses Association’s Scope and Standards of Practice.

Course Assignment

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to submit a thread in response to the provided prompt. The thread must be at least 500 words with 1–3 scholarly source(s) to support the student’s response along with the integration of at least 2 biblical principles and/or Scriptures. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 250 words. The student must support each thread and reply with 1–2 citation(s) in current APA format.

The student must develop goals and objectives to provide a framework for the practicum experience. The basis of goals and objectives is the American Nurses Association’s Scope and Standards of Practice for Nursing Informatics.

Students may not begin practicum activities until the course instructor approves goals and objectives. Goals and objectives should be shared with the preceptor for further refining after instructor approval. Goals and objectives can be revised as needed during the practicum experience with input from the preceptor and course instructor.

The student must utilize the Access 2016 Microsoft database software to complete the assignments concerning informatics. (CLO 1, 2)

Access Tables Assignment

The student must create a table with 10–15 fake patients with a similar diagnosis such as COPD. In the table, one will need to include identifying factors such as name, gender, medical record number, diagnosis, comorbidities, length of stay in the hospital, treatments, etc. Chapters 3–4 in the Microsoft Access text must be used as a guide in this process. Once the table is created, the student must work on identifying relationships.

Access Queries Assignment

Queries allow for data to be combined for effective presentation of information. The student must use the created data from Assignment I for this portion of the assignment. Chapter 8 in the Microsoft Access text is the guide for this process.

Forms/Reports Assignment

Forms/Reports allow the created data to be presented in a cohesive manner. The data created from Assignment I will be used for this portion of the assignment. The student must create a report from the original data table created in the Access Tables Assignment, utilizing the directions in Chapter 20 in the Microsoft Access text as the guide for this process.

The database data plan project will allow the student to bring together the ideas from the Access Assignments and put them in a written form in order to share the information for peer review. The project will be broken down into 4 parts throughout the course. The student will be allowed to use information from the Access Assignments without the penalty of plagiarism, as this is a comprehensive project from the entire course.

Outline Assignment

In 1 page, the student must outline the database data plan development. The student must explain in a beginning paragraph the chosen disease process and related items he or she has chosen to include in the created database in Access. Then, the student must outline the entities he or she chose and how they relate to the process. The student must include the medium in which he or she will do the presentation.

Summary Assignment

In 3–5 pages, the student must summarize the database data plan he or she has created. The student must explain why he or she has chosen the topic, explain what is being assessed, and address any patterns he or she has seen. The student must explain further the relationship diagram and how the entities and attributes relate to the database. A screenshot of the database, the tables, relationships, and queries must be included.

Presentation Assignment

The student must create a presentation describing the Database Data Plan Project created in Microsoft Access. This presentation will need to be delivered via a method that incorporates both audio and visual components. Examples include but are not limited to PowerPoint with voiceover, a Kaltura video, YouTube, Jing, etc. The presentation must be 10 slides (not including the title and reference slides) and must not exceed 15 minutes. A minimum of 5 scholarly resources published within the last 5 years in current APA format is required.

Discussion: Database Data Plan: Dissemination

The student must post his or her presentation for peer review. Replies to 2 classmates are required. Further details can be found in the grading rubric.

The student must submit a comprehensive Curriculum Vitae (CV), summary of professional expertise, and statement of teaching philosophy as outlined in the portfolio expectations. The student must address each element in a way that states fact and reflection in a concise manner. Evaluation of this assignment will be based on quality as prescribed by the grading rubric.

The Typhon Log is the documentation of the 200-hour practice experience. Fifty hours from INFO 668’s project development may be used and must be documented in the first journal entry. All documentation will occur in Typhon. Instructions for setting up Typhon are found in the MSN Handbook. The log must be comprehensive in details related to the experiences in the field and reflective of the American Nurses Association’s Scope and Standards of Practice for Nurse Informatics competencies. The discussion must be in-depth and analytical. It must also include examples of how the student has applied the ANA competencies and readings from the textbooks and professional literature in the practicum setting. Any citations must be provided in current APA format.
