Course Description

The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) requires that all social work programs have a gatekeeping process to ensure that students have a thorough understanding of the profession of social work and will be a good fit for the program and profession. The BSSW program at Liberty University includes 4 gates. All students must apply for and be approved through all 4 gates to be eligible to graduate from the BSSW program. This SOWK 465 course includes the application process for Gate 3 and Field Proposal/Enrollment process of the BSSW program. This course is 0 credits and is Pass/Fail. Approval through Gate 3 and completion of the Field Proposal/Enrollment process indicates approval to begin Senior Field Placement (SOWK 470).

Rationale

Successfully passing this course and gaining BSSW program approval through Gate 3 and the Field Proposal Process indicates a student’s approval to be registered for Senior Field.

The student will complete this assignment to ensure that eligibility requirements for the course have continued to be met.

The student will complete the Disclosure Statement Form Template to acknowledge and verify and charges, convictions, citations, etc. and to grant permission to the field education staff of the BSSW program to release information from the Disclosure Statement Form Template for the purpose of arranging field placements. 

Prior to beginning the process of securing a field placement, the student will complete a Self-Assessment. The student will explore his/her fit for the profession, compliance with professional values and ethics, and general readiness to enter the field placement. There are no right or wrong answers to the questions being asked but the student should carefully and honestly consider responses to each question and fully reflect on what that means for him/her while moving forward in the program.

The student will fill out the chart in the Field Education Self-Assessment Template.

The student will utilize provided information to complete a resume revision in preparation for an internship or employment.

The student will begin to plan for next semester in preparation for the commitment of field placement.

The student will complete placement proposal forms and demonstrate that the placement will meet agency, task, supervision, and schedule requirements according to CSWE and LU guidelines.

Competency Self-Reflection Assignments (5)

In the Competency Self-Reflection Assignments, students will review the 9 core social work competencies outlined in the 2015 EPAS. Students will reflect on their current strengths and areas of growth related to each competency and develop a SMART goal for further development for each competency.

The student will not submit anything for this assignment. The student's assigned field advisor will indicate whether the proposal has been approved, after the entire proposal (Forms #1-6) have been submitted correctly and completely.

The student will not submit anything for this assignment. The student must successfully complete all assignments in this course and receive full approval on a field placement proposal to be eligible for Gate Approval.
