BSSW GATE 1 & Approval Process – SOWK 294

Course Description

The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) requires that all social work programs have a gatekeeping process to ensure that students have a thorough understanding of the profession of social work and will be a good fit for the program and profession. The BSSW program at Liberty University includes 4 gates. All students must apply for and be approved through all 4 gates to be eligible to graduate from the BSSW program. This SOWK 294 course includes the application process for GATE 1 of the BSSW program. This course is 0 credits and is Pass/Fail. Approval through GATE 1 indicates official acceptance into the BSSW program to pursue.

Rationale

Successfully passing this course and gaining BSSW program approval through Gate 1 indicates a student’s approval into the BSSW Program.

Degree Completion Plan Audit Assignment (2)

The student will submit a PDF of his/her Degree Completion Plan Audit (DCPA).

Order Confirmation for Background Check and Fingerprints Assignment

Four course requirements are connected with these checks: Order Confirmation for Background Check and Fingerprints Assignment, Confirmation of Pending Results Assignment, and submitting the Results documents via the Background Check Results Assignment and the Fingerprint Results Assignment.

Autobiographical Statement Assignment

This is a 6–7 page essay describing the student using the given prompts. It is used to help the department get to know the student and evaluate if an interview is needed.

Disclosure Statement Form Assignment

The student must fill out and sign the Disclosure Statement Form to grant permission to the Field education staff of the Department of Social Work to release information from this form for the purpose of arranging field placements. 

Gate 1 Application Packet Assignment

This packet includes information about the student to help the department get to know him/her and evaluate if an interview is needed.

The student will submit a screenshot of the To-Do list in his or her Castle Branch account showing that his or her Background Check and Fingerprints have been ordered and the documentation mailed off for processing with the company.

Personal Recommendation Assignment

Three Recommendation Forms – not letters of recommendation – must be submitted for this course. This form must be completed by a non-relative (related by blood or marriage) and not a significant other, who has known the student for a minimum of 2 years and who is 25+ years old. 

These must be completed by two people who have known the student in a professional context and is not a relative (related by blood or marriage) or a significant other. 

This Additional Recommendation is the second, required professional recommendation.

The student will submit his or her Background Check Results document.

The student will submit his or her Fingerprint Results document.

CORE Order Confirmation Assignment

Students will submit proof of purchase for the CORE license.

Course Sequence Plan Assignment

Students will use resources provided to develop a Course Sequence Plan to arrange a schedule for completing their remaining courses.

Gate 1 Decision Assignment

Completed by Department. The student's Gate decision will be emailed to him/her and posted within the gradebook. Approval (both full and provisional) will result in full awardance of points and completion of the Gate.

Quizzes (13)

The student will complete 13 quizzes based on each Module's learn material. Each quiz will contain 1-10 questions. The quizzes will have no time limit.
