Course Description

This course emphasizes the personal health and self-care of the social worker.




Self-care is an important aspect in the field of social work since practicing in this field can be stressful.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

Demonstrate Ethical and Professional Behavior (CSWE Competency 1)

  • Learn to make ethical decisions by applying the standards of the NASW Code of Ethics, relevant laws and regulations, models for ethical decision-making, ethical conduct of research and additional codes of ethics as appropriate to context.
  • Use reflection and self-regulation to manage personal values and maintain professionalism in practice situations.
  • Demonstrate professional demeanor in behavior; appearance, and oral, written and electronic communication.
  • Use technology ethically and appropriately to facilitate practice outcomes.

Discussion Board Forums (4)

Discussion boards are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each forum. Each thread must be 350 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. Each thread must be supported by at least 1 citation from a scholarly article, assigned course materials and at least 1 biblical principle. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be 150–250 words and must be supported by at least 1 citation from a peer-reviewed journal, assigned course materials or at least 1 biblical integration. Self-Care Eco Map

The student will develop a personal Self-care Eco map following the instructions in the assigned readings. Upon completing the SelfCare Eco Map, the student will follow the textbook’s prompts to write a 2–3-page reflective paper. The paper must have an APA cover page. Both the Self-care Eco map graphic and the written reflection paper are to be submitted. This assesses Competency 1 (Ethics/Professional Behavior)

Self-Care Plan

The student will reference the website and fact sheet assigned in Module/Week 7 to develop a personal Self-Care Plan using the forms in Appendix A and B in the A-to-Z Self-Care Handbook. The student should address a Physical, Psychological, Social, Professional/Academic and a Spiritual dimension to his/her care plan. Both the SMART diagram and the written reflection are to be submitted in this assignment. This assesses Competency 1 (Ethics/Professional Behavior)

Quizzes (8)

Each quiz will cover the Reading & Study material for the assigned module/week. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 10 multiple-choice and true/false questions, and have a 45-minute time limit. The quizzes assess Competency 1 (Ethics/Professional Behavior)
