In this course, students explore current research and theory related to the emergence of contemporary virtual organizations in the 21st century. The dimensions of virtual work, as well as evaluation of managerial and individual challenges facing virtual organizations is examined. Focus is given to effectiveness, communication, technology changes, and functionality in the work setting.
The purpose of this course is to understand virtuality and the challenges facing virtual organizations. This course will assist the student in exploring the dimensions of working in a virtual environment. Key topics will include virtual teams, socialization, communication, and the reality of virtual working.
Measurable Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify key theories and research related to contemporary virtual organizations.
- Assess components of effective and functional virtual organizations.
- Evaluate managerial and individual challenges facing virtual organizations.
- Understand the impact of communication and the role of technology in virtual settings.
- Utilize Biblical principles to interpret research relative to contemporary virtual organizations.

Discussion Board Forums (2)
Discussion boards are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each forum. Discussion Board Forum 1 must be 300 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads in current APA format. Each reply must be 150 words. Discussion Board Forum 2 will involve each group posting their Virtual Team Presentation for review and comment by classmates. The student is then required to reply to 2 presentation posts. Each reply must be 150 words in current APA format.
Group Discussion Board Forums (4)
For this collaborative discussion board, the instructor will place the student into a group at the beginning of the course. The students will be working collaboratively on the Virtual Team Presentation through the use of the group discussion board forums. The student is required to demonstrate interaction with group members in the group discussion forum based on the provided prompt for each forum. The student will be graded on individual interaction in the group discussion board forums and/or the group work product that is submitted at the close of the module/week in which the group discussion board forum is assigned.
Virtual Team Presentation
For this collaborative presentation, the student will take part in the preparation of a 13–15 slide narrated PowerPoint presentation explaining what is known in the research about a topic relating to contemporary virtual organizations. The presentation will include sources cited and referenced in current APA style. The student will narrate a portion of the presentation and will contribute a minimum of 2 peer-reviewed scholarly research articles on the topic chosen by the group.
The student will write a 2–3-page Reflective Essay in current APA format that reflects on the process of engaging in the online virtual team throughout the course. The paper must cite at least 2 peer-reviewed journal articles.
Each quiz will cover the Reading & Study material for the assigned modules/weeks. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 2 essay questions, and have a 2-hour time limit.
