Clinical Psychopharmacology – NURS 752

Course Description

This course provides a case-based approach to utilizing best practices and principles for using psychopharmacology to treat mental illness and disorders across the lifespan. The course examines neuropharmacological mechanisms, pharmacodynamics, and drug interactions of commonly used psychotropic drugs. Emphasis is on the development of client-centered prescriptive decisions within the context of outcomes, safety, quality and costs.

Rationale

This PMHNP course helps meet standards of graduate-level nursing education as articulated by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essentials of Doctoral Education for Advanced Practice Nursing. This course meets standards of nurse practitioner education as articulated by the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF).

Ethics Essay Question Assignment

The student will select 1 of several provided current ethical issues, research that issue, and prepare a response written in current APA format. The written response must be at least 1 page, describe the ethical issue, cite 2 applicable biblical and ethical principles, cite 2 scholarly references, and expound on the proper role or conduct of the Christian advanced nurse practitioner regarding the ethical issue.

Case Study Critique Assignments (3)

The Case Study Critiques constitute a significant learning portion of this course, and you are expected to put forth a thoughtful and scholarly effort.  These assignments will enable you to apply the information on medications you learned from the lecture slides and textbook to patient cases. You will learn to critique other proposals to pharmacotherapy based on literature and evidence.

Case Study Analysis Assignments (3)

The Case Study Analysis constitutes a significant learning portion of this course, and you are expected to put forth a thoughtful and scholarly effort.  These assignments will enable you to apply the information on medications you learned from the lecture slides and textbook to patient cases. You will learn to provide proposals to pharmacotherapy based on literature and evidence.

Two live discussions will occur via Microsoft Teams during the 8-week course as scheduled in the Course Schedule.

Quizzes (4)

Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the specified modules: weeks. Each quiz will be closed-book/closed-notes, contain 25 multiple-choice and/or multiple-answer questions, and have a 43-minute time limit. Proctorio will be utilized to maintain testing integrity.
