Course Description

This course examines the nature of nursing knowledge and the development of its underpinnings. Various approaches to concept and/or theory development, analysis, and evaluation are examined and applied. The course explores the connections between research, theory and practice as it relates to the development of nursing knowledge.

Prerequisites

None

Rationale

This course will provide the student with the ability to enhance his or her understanding of nursing knowledge development so that he or she will be able to apply that knowledge in his or her future research.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Articulate the development of nursing knowledge and its underpinnings.
  2. Analyze various approaches to theory development.
  3. Analyze a theory related to a phenomenon of interest.
  4. Explore the connection between theory, research, and practice.
  5. Articulate a Christian worldview while examining a selected nursing theory as it relates to a phenomenon of interest.
  6. Evaluate nursing theory development from a Christian worldview.

Course Assignment

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in Module/Week 1.

Discussion boards are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each forum. Each thread must demonstrate course-related knowledge and answer each element of the discussion board prompt. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads.

The student must write a 6-page research-based paper in current APA format, focusing on essential elements of theory and providing examples from nursing literature. The paper must include at least 4–6 peer-reviewed references. Course textbooks and the Bible may be used but do not count toward the minimum required number of references.

The student must write an 8-page research-based paper in current APA format. The student must focus on describing a nursing theory and a phenomenon of interest, and complete a concept analysis from an established method. The student must also describe how a Chrsitan worldview can be applied to the selected nursing theory. The paper must include at least 6–8 peer-reviewed references. Course textbooks and the Bible may be used but do not count toward the minimum required number of references.

The student must write a 7-page research-based paper in current APA format. The student must describe in detail the theory and all components of the theory. The student must summarize the development of the particular theory and analyze the theory related to a phenomenon of interest. The student must also describe how a Christian worldview can be applied to the selected nursing theory and phenomenon of interest. The paper must include at least 6–8 peer-reviewed references. Course textbooks and the Bible may be used but do not count toward the minimum required number of references.
