Systems Management and Leadership for Nurse Leaders – NURS 524

This course is designed for students who desire to develop skills in the areas of leadership and management who plan to utilize their selected area of advanced practice and knowledge as nurse leaders within healthcare organizations. Students will investigate content areas that will build knowledge and expertise in working with systems theories, high performing work teams, information systems, change theories and theories of organizational behavior. Leadership styles and innovations styles will be explored.

In a complex healthcare environment, the nurse administrator needs to develop knowledge, skills, and abilities that support an environment of excellence and safety for patients, families, and staff. This course provides an overview of the concepts that will serve as a foundation for building these skills.
Measurable Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Contrast various leadership styles while determining personal leadership style through self-assessment.
- Appraise ethical and legal considerations pertaining to leadership.
- Analyze strategies for organizational and fiscal planning that support positive outcomes.
- Evaluate organizational structures that coordinate and support effective patient care.
- Discuss staffing and team issues in a learning organization.
- Examine characteristics of a professional practice setting.
- Distinguish the quality and safety standards that are essential to a healthcare organization.
- Apply the Christian worldview to individual nursing practice.

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in Module/Week 1.
Discussion Board Forums (2)
Discussion boards are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to create a thread in response to the provided prompt for each forum. Each thread must be at least 500 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 250 words and be cited using current APA format.
Reflective Exercises (2)
The student will complete 2 Reflective Exercises in current APA format. Each Reflective Exercise must include a title page and reference page and must follow the paper’s guidelines regarding page length and use of scholarly sources.
Strategic Planning Literature Review
The student will write a 5-7 page literature review regarding the impact of strategic planning on patient outcomes within healthcare. The student will summarize findings and must cite 5-7 scholarly sources in addition to the course textbooks.
Political Power in Nursing
After completing the assigned reading, the student will write a 2–3-page paper articulating the concept of power and the influential role that nursing plays and could play in the future within the complex environment of healthcare. The student must cite 3–5 scholarly sources in addition to the course textbooks.
Christian Nurse Leader Paper
The student will write a 10–12-page research-oriented paper in current APA format that focuses on servant leadership. The paper must include at least 8-10 scholarly sources in addition to the course textbooks and the Bible. This assignment will be completed in 2 parts: the Annotated Bibliography and the completed Christian Nurse Leader Paper.
The Influence of Teams on Patient Outcomes
After completing the assigned reading, the student will write a 3–5-page paper highlighting his/her personal experience with teams and teamwork in order to achieve improved patient outcomes. The student must cite 4-6 scholarly sources in addition to the course textbooks.
Professional Practice Model Paper
The student will write a 5–7-page research-based paper in current APA format that focuses on developing a professional practice model (PPM) for an organization in which the student might one day be a nurse leader or are currently a nurse leader. The paper must include at least 5–7 references in addition to the course textbooks and the Bible.
