Course Description

This course is designed to assist the registered nurse student through the transition between basic nursing preparation and a more advanced level of nursing practice. Focus is on concepts and issues related to the professional nurse, the nature and scope of professional nursing and selected theoretical models for nursing practice.

The development of a theoretical basis for nursing practice is a hallmark of the education of baccalaureate-prepared nurses.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Analyze current professional literature regarding developmental programs in the endorsement area.
  2. Discuss the Dreyfus Model of Skill Acquisition as it relates to the practice of professional nursing.
  3. Assess nursing practice according to the novice-to-expert continuum.
  4. Compare Benner’s Seven Domains of Nursing to current nursing practice.
  5. Reflect on the advanced beginner role as it relates to mentoring new graduate nurses.
  6. Care for other nurses, both novice and expert, based on a Christian worldview.

Course Requirements Checklist

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in Module/Week 1.

Discussion Board Forums (5)

Discussion boards are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will create a thread in response to the provided prompt for each forum. Each thread must be at least 300 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student will reply to at least 2 classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 200 words. Each thread and reply must incorporate at least 1 citation from a scholarly source (published within the last 5 years) and a citation from the text in current APA format.

Nursing Mentor Outline

The student will write an outline for the Nursing Mentor Paper. The outline must include at least 2 research article references (published within the last 5 years) and at least 4 Scripture references. Current APA format must be used.

Benner’s Seven Domains Chart

The student will complete a chart describing Benner’s Seven Domains of Nursing and how each domain relates to practice. At least 1 reference must be included for each domain. Current APA format must be used.

Nursing Mentor Paper

The student will write a 750–1,000-word paper in current APA format examining nursing mentoring characteristics and formulating a plan for becoming a mentor or mentee. The paper must include at least 3 research article references (published within the last 5 years) and at least 4 Scripture references.

APA Quizzes (5)

The student will complete 5 short APA quizzes during the course to help re-inforce APA skills learned in NURS 220. The skills will be necessary for written assignment completion in this and future courses. Scores are based on completion and have an unlimited amount of attempts.
