This course will examine the American Legal system and provide in-depth coverage of the political, social, and legal issues impacting fire service administration. The course emphasizes the legal responsibilities, liabilities, and authorities of the fire service professional.
Accountability and responsibility are necessary to each individual in society. Individuals in the fire service must maintain a high level of integrity for the good of the order and the community they serve. Integrity of the individual is often measured and or articulated through accountability and responsibility.
Measurable Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Compare the differences between employee rights, discrimination, and sexual harassment.
- Comprehend labor law and its relationship to accountability and responsibility.
- Evaluate civil liability and negligence through Biblical Application.
- Define types of law including but not limited to; fair labor law, criminal law, EMS law, and associated criminal procedure.
- Classify administrative agencies and the concepts related to their role in fire law.
After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in Module/Week 1.
This quiz will help prepare the student to understand course expectations and assignment requirements.
The student will analyze a current event related to a legal and/or political event in the fire administration context. The event must have occurred within the last 2 years. The assignment should be in APA format with a length of 3 to 4 double-spaced pages of content and should include a link to the article as part of the reference page.
Using the assigned scenario, the student will compose a case study of the scenario, analyzing the key lessons learned from the situation and proposed remedies. The assignment should be in APA format with a length of 3 to 4 double-spaced pages of content
These papers will require the student to analyze specific legal issues which are crucial to understanding the legal and political factors of fire administration. Understanding these legal cases, rights, policies, etc. will help the student be better prepared as fire administration leaders. The assignment should be in APA format with a length of 3 to 4 double-spaced pages of content.
The student will complete an assessment of a major ethical issue relating to fire administration. The assignment should be in APA format with a length 5 to 7 double-spaced pages of content.
