Course Description

This course will examine the American Legal System and provide in-depth coverage of the political, social, and legal issues impacting the fire service. The course emphasizes accountability, legal responsibilities, liabilities, and authorities of the fire service professional.

Rationale

Accountability and responsibility are necessary to each individual in society. Individuals in the fire service must maintain a high level of integrity for the good of the order and the community they serve. Integrity of the individual is often measured and or articulated through accountability and responsibility.

Course Assignment

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.

The student will analyze a current event related to a legal and/or political event in the fire administration context.  The event must have occurred within the last 2 years. The assignment should be in APA format with a length of  3 to 4 double-spaced pages of content and should include a link to the article as part of the reference page.

Using the assigned scenario, the student will compose a case study of the scenario, analyzing the key lessons learned from the situation and proposed remedies. The assignment should be in APA format with a length of 3 to 4 double-spaced pages of content

These papers will require the student to analyze specific legal issues which are crucial to understanding the legal and political factors of fire administration.  Understanding these legal cases, rights, policies, etc. will help the student be better prepared as fire administration leaders.  The assignment should be in APA format with a length of 3 to 4 double-spaced pages of content.

The student will complete an assessment of a major ethical issue relating to fire administration. The assignment should be in APA format with a length 5 to 7 double-spaced pages of content.
