Course Description

Study of retail merchandising concepts essential for buyers and managers within the creative industries. Emphasis is placed on buying procedures, assortment planning, inventory control, price, and profit analysis.

Rationale

To equip the individual in entry-level management positions with sound merchandising theory and the ability to translate that theory into the profit factors that govern the day-to-day operations of any retail store.

Read & Interact Assignments (17)

Students will follow readings and answer questions to complete each Read & Interact assignment (CLOs: A, B, C, D, E, F).

Quizzes: Presentations and Retailing Management (8)

Weekly quizzes are designed to reinforce the information from presentations and readings from Retailing Management. The quizzes each contain 10 multiple-choice and true/false questions, are limited to 20 minutes, and allow 1 attempt (CLOs: A, B, C, D, E, F).

Quizzes: Entwhistle (8)

Essay quizzes covering assigned readings from The Aesthetic Economy of Fashion : Markets and Value in Clothing and Modelling. The quizzes each contain 1 essay question, are limited to 45 minutes, and allow 1 attempt (CLOs: B, C, E, F).

Simulation Assignments (5)

The Simulations Assignments will put the student in charge of making merchandising decisions for a computer-generated company. The student will compete against computer generated companies for market share, product satisfaction, and sales. Each simulation has a unique set of goals focusing on a specific merchandising topic. The simulations build on each other so completing them in order is essential to success. (CLOs: A, B, C, D, F).

Written Reflection Assignments (5)

Completion of the written reflection will enable the student to practice communicating the how, the what, and the why of the decisions in the Simulation Assignments. This assignment should be 200-400 words in length and cover the required content. (CLOs: A, B, C, D, F).

Merchandising Connections Assignments (2)

Taking the time to observe theories being discussed in the retail environment will help understand the concepts and apply them in future careers. The student will write a 2-3 summary of a shopping trip and their observations of the decision-making process (CLOs: C, E, F).

Quiz: Final Exam

Comprehensive final quiz will the cover all presentations and readings from Retailing management. The quizzes each contain 100 multiple-choice and true/false questions, are limited to 2 hours, and allow 1 attempt.
