Course Description

Co-teaching with a qualified classroom teacher in a public or accredited nonpublic school and participation in professional activities. Applies what has been learned in the program to the actual process of teaching and guiding PreK-12 students. Offers practice in all phases of teacher responsibility.

Rationale

Student teaching is the culmination of all of the candidate’s course work for preparation for teaching. It is essential to provide an opportunity to communicate with university supervisors.

Discussions (2)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the candidate is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each forum. Each thread must be 200 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the candidate is required to reply to 2 classmates’ threads. Each reply must be 100 words. (CLO: A)

Placement Verification

The Placement Verification form must be completed after the first day of the placement providing the information requested regarding the placement location and on-site mentor information. This information must be consistent with the information provided by the Field Office. The candidate will let the instructor know if there are any discrepancies.

edTPA Intention Form

The edTPA Intention form indicates the candidate’s intention for the edTPA tasks. This decision will determine whether the candidate will register for the edTPA for Liberty University and the state where they live or for Liberty University only.

Journal Entries & Weekly Logs (15)

The candidate will complete and submit two documents at the end of each module: week regarding their experiences in the placement that week. First, the candidate will write a journal entry which consists of a 2-3 paragraph summary reflecting what went well, what was challenging, and what he/she learned during that particular week of the placement as he/she applies information learned from the course text and presentations. Second, the candidate will complete and submit the weekly log (located in the Student Teaching Handbook) recording the hours he/she completed in the placement that week. The candidate will also record weekly hour totals in the FEM of LiveText with On-Site Supervisor confirmation of hours completed. (CLO: B)

Weekly Schedule and Lesson Plans (10)

The candidate will submit Weekly Schedules for his/her placement each Friday prior to the week the schedule will be used. Additionally, the candidate will submit Lesson Plans each Friday prior to the week the lessons are taught. The lesson plans for the first five lessons taught for each core subject area will be written as detailed lesson plans. After completing the five detailed lesson plans for a core subject area, the candidate can use block lesson plans for the subsequent lessons. The differences between completing the two kinds and further guidelines are outlined in the course. (CLO: C, D, E)

Quiz: Placement Attendance

The candidate will complete the Attendance Quiz by answering questions regarding attendance for the student teaching placement.

Initial Visit and Confidentiality Agreement

The Initial Visit form is located in the Student Teacher Handbook. The candidate’s supervisor will obtain this form from and complete it during the candidate’s first visit to the school. (CLO: A)

edTPA Video Assignment

The edTPA Video assignment requires the candidate to watch 6 videos, locate edTPA documents needed for the assessment, and complete guided questions. (CLO: E)

Field Experience Summary Check

The candidate will submit his/her Field Experience Summary (FES) form for review. If an area has not been completed, the candidate will need to make arrangements to complete any missing field experiences. (CLO: D)

edTPA Context for Learning

The candidate will complete the Context for Learning portion of edTPA to demonstrate knowledge of the student teaching classroom. The submission will include an understanding of the diverse needs of the students the candidate is working with throughout the semester. (CLO: D)

University Supervisor Observations (2)

The University Supervisor will complete the observation form provided in The Student Teaching Handbook for two formal lessons the candidate teaches during the placement. (CLO: C, D, E, F)

Mid-Term CPAST

The candidate’s Cooperating Teacher will complete this assessment through the FEM in LiveText. The consensus score report should be submitted by the candidate in the course. (CLO: A, C, D, E, F)

edTPA Task 1

The candidate will complete Task 1 of edTPA using the provided edTPA Handbook. This submission will include the Lesson Plans for Learning Segments, Instructional Materials, Assessments, and the Planning Commentary. (CLO: F)

edTPA Task 2

The candidate will complete Task 2 of edTPA using the provided edTPA Handbook. This submission will include the video clip(s) and Instruction Commentary. (CLO: C, F)

edTPA Technical Review

edTPA is a subject-specific assessment that includes versions for 27 teaching fields. All candidates enrolled in a student teaching course will be completing the edTPA for a course requirement. All tasks will be submitted to LiveText for a technical review. (CLO: E, F)

Licensure Requirements for the Portfolio

There are several certifications the candidate will need to complete for his/her license. These will be uploaded into the portfolio in LiveText near the end of the semester. Complete the certification modules that apply to the candidate’s degree and attach a copy of each of the completed module certificates to the Evidence of Scholarship/Competencies and Skills section of his/her portfolio. Video Lesson

In order for the course instructor to be able to observe and evaluate the candidate’s teaching, the candidate will need to make arrangements to have one of his/her lessons videotaped. The recorded lesson must be 30 minutes or less and include the entire lesson, from beginning to end. (CLO: C, D, E, F)

edTPA Score Report

After the candidate receives his/her edTPA Score Report from Pearson, he/she will submit the report within the course. (CLO: E)

Field Experience Assessment

The Field Experience Assessment is completed in two parts in LiveText. The completed FES form should be submitted for review and a reflection regarding these experiences should also be included. This assignment must be submitted in LiveText. Failure to complete all areas on the FES form will impact the final course grade and will hinder the candidate from proceeding to Gate 4. Portfolio

The candidate will complete the Portfolio he/she has been working on throughout the program and will submit it to both LiveText and to the course. (CLO: C, D, E, F)

P-12 Survey Assignment

The P-12 Survey Assignment is a way for the candidate to receive feedback from students about their perceptions of candidate instruction and effectiveness as a teacher. The assignment should be completed in LiveText near the end of his/her student teaching placement. (CLO: F)

Final CPAST

The candidate’s Cooperating Teacher will complete this assessment through the FEM section of LiveText. The consensus score report should be submitted by the candidate in the course. (CLO: A, C, D, E, F)

Quiz: Program Completer Survey

The candidate will complete a quiz after submitting a survey providing the School of Education information to continue contact after graduation.
