This course will focus on students preparing a Concept Paper and preparing students for their applied doctoral research project.
This course exists in order for students to demonstrate sufficient understanding of the primary fields and theories in the communication discipline.
Assigned readings will include scholarly articles and selected texts.

After reading the Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.
The student will post a 2–4 minute video introduction in which the student will introduce themselves to the professor and their fellow students.
This multi-part essay is designed to explore the role of a theory in communication research, explain the primary traditions in the field of communication, and designate a communication theory that could serve as a theoretical framework for the student's dissertation research.
Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each thread must be a minimum of 1000 words, utilize a minimum of 8 references, and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be 500 words and include a minimum of 5 references. All posts must be in current APA format.
This assignment will organize the essential research related to the student’s selected theory that has been gathered throughout this course. This assignment is not intended to present new material. Instead, this assignment should present aggregated materials in an organized and meaningful way. The minimum word count for the assignment is 750 words, which does not include the title page, abstract and reference pages. All components must comply with current APA format.
For this assignment, the student will provide background and analysis of the methodologies that have been used in previous studies to test the theory selected for their research proposal. This concise document (500 – 1000 words) will form the foundation that may be used use in the dissertation phase. The paper will include a section that connects how a Biblical perspective will inform, guide, or even limit the student's proposed methodological approach.
This 15 - 18 page final paper will combine all of the research and assignments from this course into a comprehensive research proposal. This research proposal will introduce the student's research topic and theoretical framework, provide a relevant literature review related to the research topic and theory, present research questions or hypotheses that will guide the proposed research, and the proposed methods that will be used.
