School Counseling Gate 3 – COSC 690

Course Description

This COSC 690 course includes the application process for Gate 3.0 and internship field placement for the school counseling program. This course is 0 credits and is Pass/Fail. Approval through Gate 3.0 and completion of the internship application process indicates approval to begin the school counseling internship (COSC 693 or COSC 699).

Rationale

This application course should be taken the semester prior to Internship (excluding the Summer semester). Internship candidates must take this application course twice. Intern candidates will apply (COSC 690) once before Internship Part 1 (COSC 699) and again (COSC 690) before Internship Part 2 (COSC 699).

Course Assignment

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the candidate will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.

For each assignment, the candidate will need to complete or upload the required items for the internship application. Feedback will be provided for the candidate to resubmit an item if needed and as directed from the feedback provided in the assignment comments.

This quiz will confirm that the candidate has read, understands, and agrees to the School Counseling Internship Terms and Requirements. This quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 16 True/False questions, and will have no time limit.

Quiz: Degree Completion Plan Audit (DCPA) 

This quiz will confirm that the candidate’s Degree Completion Plan Audit shows proof of at least a 3.0 GPA, Gate 2 clearance, Gate 2.5 clearance, and that the student has taken or is registered for all prerequisite courses, aside from Internship. This quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 1 assignment upload (DCPA) question, and will have no time limit.

Quiz: Teaching/School Counseling Experience

This quiz will determine if the candidate has any previous teaching experience or school counseling experience or holds a current teaching license. This quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 1 short answer question, and will have no time limit.

This quiz will require the candidate to submit a copy of his/her Criminal Background Clearance Report. This quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 1 upload (Criminal Background Clearance), and will have no time limit.

Quiz: FBI Fingerprinting 

This quiz will require the candidate to submit a copy of his/her FBI Fingerprinting Clearance Report. This quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 1 upload question (FBI Fingerprint Clearance Results), and will have no time limit.

Quiz: Virginia Child Abuse Registry Check 

This quiz will require Virginia candidates (only) to submit a copy of his/her Virginia Child Abuse Registry Check Clearance Report, if the candidate is completing school counseling internship in Virginia. This quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contains 1 short answer question and 1 file upload question (Virginia Child Abuse Registry Check) *for Virginia students only, and will have no time limit.

Quiz: Internship Placement Request 

This quiz will require the candidate to submit a copy of his/her Internship Placement Request Form. This quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 1 upload (placement request document), and will have no time limit.

The quiz will require the candidate to prepare a professional introduction email. This quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 1 file upload question, and will have no time limit.

Quiz: ASCA Membership

This quiz will require the candidate to submit a copy of their current American School Counselor Association (ASCA) Membership Card. This membership confirms that the candidate also has professional liability insurance coverage through ASCA. This quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 1 upload (ASCA Membership Card) question, and will have no time limit.

Quiz: TB Results

This quiz will require the candidate to a copy of his/her negative TB Test/Screening. This quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 1 upload (TB Negative Results) question, and will have no time limit.

Quiz: Student Confirmation of the Completion of Modules 1-8 

This quiz is a checkpoint to be sure the candidate has submitted all requirements for Modules 1-8. The first 8 modules are required before the candidate is placed at a school site.
