Course Description

This course provides exposure to financial modeling techniques for business analysis application. Topics include theoretical development, modeling approaches, financial analysis, and applications of financial modeling.

Prerequisites

BUSI 530 and BUSI 687

Rationale

Financial modeling concerns the process of constructing spreadsheet models of a firm’s future financial statements in order to evaluate the company’s past performance, future prospects and to determine its proper valuation. In this course, students will learn and develop advanced Excel spreadsheet skills that are highly valued in today’s business world.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Explain the process of creating an Excel spreadsheet financial model.
  2. Compare and contrast the components of alternative financial models.
  3. Analyze the assumptions used in financial models and timelines in the model.
  4. Create a financial model to evaluate past performance, forecast future trends, and value a business.
  5. Evaluate financial modeling within a biblical perspective.

Discussion Board Forums (4)

Discussion boards are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each forum. Each thread must be 500 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be 450 words.

A Novice’s Guide to Reading an Annual Report

The student must write a 1000-word or longer guide using current APA formatting guidelines titled: “A Novice’s Guide to Reading an Annual Report.”

Chosen Company Annual Report Summary

The student must obtain and read copies of the 3 most recent annual reports of the company chosen in Discussion Board Assignment 1. The student must write a 1000-word or longer summary, using current APA formatting guidelines, of the company’s financial performance as described in the shareholders letters and management discussions. The summary must include 3 references.

Spreadsheet and Analysis Assignments (3)

The student must create, as per textbook guidelines, a ratio analysis spreadsheet, a financial forecast spreadsheet, and a valuation spreadsheet for his/her chosen company. He/she will also write a 1000-word or longer analysis of the data presented in each spreadsheet. Each assignment must include 3 references.

Integration of Faith and Learning (IFL)

Financial modeling concerns, in the most basic sense, constructing a plan. The Bible also has much to say about planning. The student must write a 1000-word or longer paper demonstrating how the Bible supports at least 1 specific topic or lesson learned in this course. The paper must use current APA formatting guidelines. The purpose of this paper recognize some basic principles that are common between good business practices and Christianity. This assignment must include 2 references.
