Course Description

This course will provide an overview of healthcare administration career opportunities ranging from direct care facilities such as hospitals and physician practices, as well as non-direct health care entities such as associations, insurance companies and medical supplier organizations. Evaluating the healthcare management workforce, understanding healthcare management, and healthcare management practice settings will be completed.

Rationale

The purpose of this course is to provide early to mid-career students an opportunity to identify the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to succeed in a health care administrator role as well as review the various positions in available in the U.S.-based direct and non-direct care organizations.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Evaluate the role of the healthcare administrator in either a direct or non-direct care facility.
  2. Analyze the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to succeed in a healthcare administrative role.
  3. Evaluate perspectives of healthcare managers.
  4. Synthesize the role of the healthcare manager founded on Christian principles.

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in Module/Week 1.

Discussion Board Forums

Discussion boards are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to create a thread in response to the provided prompt for each forum. Each thread must be at least 1,000 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge and research. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 450 words. Each thread and each reply must be supported by at least 2 scriptural references and at least 3 peer-reviewed, scholarly references in addition to the course textbook. All sources must have been published within the last five years.

Talent Quotient Quiz Analysis

Each student will complete the Talent Quotient Quiz located in Chapter 1 of the course text. Upon completion of the quiz, the student will analyze the results. Answer the questions posed for the assignment in an APA formatted paper. Include at least 3 peer-reviewed, scholarly sources. The paper should be 3–4 pages, not including the cover page, abstract, or references.

Note: You will need to conduct research to identify what a healthcare administrator should possess to succeed in the position.

Applied Healthcare Management

The student will write a 4-5 page APA, excluding title page, abstract, and references, formatted paper providing an analysis of one direct and one non-direct healthcare organization. Compare/contrast organizational structure, missions, and roles of the healthcare administrators in each facility.

Field Activity Project

The student will complete a 3-part field activity project in APA format that focuses on Career Development in Healthcare Administration.

Field Activity Part 1: Field Interview Analysis

The student will conduct interviews with 2 healthcare administrators in either a direct or non-direct healthcare facility. The student will submit an analysis of the key knowledge, skills and abilities needed to succeed in the positions. Include the perspectives of the interviewees to serving in the positions. The paper will be 4-5, excluding title page, abstract, and references, pages in length.

Field Activity Part 2: Resume Review

The student will conduct research to identify a healthcare administrator position currently available. The position should be one in which the student will be qualified for in the next 2-3 years (upon completion of the current degree and required experience). Then, based on the talent quotient quiz analysis, interviews completed and research conducted, the student will create a resume for the identified healthcare administrator position. The student will have a healthcare administrator review the resume and provide feedback. Submit a copy of the job description, summary of the professional feedback provided and a final draft of the resume.

Field Activity Part 3: Career Development Plan

The student will submit a career development plan. First, describe the  role of the healthcare manager/administrator based upon Biblical principles. Using the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, provide analysis of the demand for the position, skills and knowledge needed described in Field Activity Part 2. Provide an evaluation of the gap between the student’s current KSAs and what will be needed to be qualified for the job described in the Field Activity Part 2 assignment. Then, describe the career development plan to obtain the KSAs needed. The paper should be 8-10 pages, excluding title page, abstract, and references, in length, include at least 5 scholarly sources, the course text, Bible and all other sources utilized.
