Course Description

This course is designed to train students to successfully complete the FAA Certified Flight Instructor Instrument Certificate. The course will contain both academic classroom and aircraft flight training required by FAA regulations.

Rationale

The purpose of this course is to integrate all flight training through the commercial certificate into the practical FAA requirements to become a Certified Flight Instructor Instrument. The requirements of this course come from FAA Advisory Circular AC 61-65E regulations. Completion of this course will prepare the student to take the FAA in-flight practical CFII check flight.

Course Assignment

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.

The student must submit a 2–3 minute video introduction. The student may use a multi-media platform of choice to record his/her video. However, Kaltura is recommended. Specific elements stated within the Discussion prompt must be included. This will be a graded assignment. The student must also reply to at least 2 classmates' introductions. Each reply must contain at least 150 words, including a question or a relevant follow-up response to guide the discussion.

Quiz: FTA Student Handbook Acknowledgment

The FTA Student Handbook provides essential information and requirements for the successful completion of the flight training program. This quiz will ask the student to acknowledge that he/she has read the FTA Student Handbook provided in the SOA Flight Student Community (see Explore item in Module 1 for link) as well as any and all information provided within the Liberty University ATLAS website. This quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned module. This quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 1 yes/no question, and have a 1 hour time limit.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student must complete 3 Discussions in this course. The student will post a thread of 400-500 words for each Discussion. In addition, the student must then post 2 replies of 250 words. These are intended to be scholarly dialogues and for each thread, the student must support his/her assertions with proper scholarly support in APA format with at least 2 sources listed as References at the end of the post. As the student progresses through Training Course Outline at their Flight Training Affiliate, it is very important that the student stays on pace to complete the course requirements before the end of the semester. To help the student stay fully aware of their own progress and to keep the professor informed, the student will digitally submit a Flight Course Log at the end of the assigned Module: Week, regardless of how many training units were complete during the previous week. Each area of the Flight Course Log Form must be completed fully and accurately. This is the student’s opportunity to keep a journal of their flight training experience and it will serve as a means for the professor to understand how things are going in flight training.  The student should describe any difficulties or challenges they are experiencing. This is a graded assignment but think of it more as a way to take good notes about progress and as a means of communicating directly with the professor. Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned module. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 10 essay questions, and have a 1 hour time limit. (CLO: B, C)

As an Instrument Flight Instructor, the student will be responsible for teaching some of the most challenging material in flight training. It is imperative that the student can adequately communicate and instruct his/her students. At this point in the student's career, he/she has already earned the title of Flight Instructor, and he/she holds an Instrument Rating; now, the student is required to integrate the material in a manageable manner for his/her students. These lesson plan assignments are designed to help the student organize his/her thoughts and prepare for the ground lessons he/she will need to teach. These three lesson plans must follow the instructions provided in each module and be submitted in the provided template. (CLO: A, C, D)

The purpose of these quizzes is to prepare the student for instructing. Each quiz will cover material from the Flight Instructor: Fundamentals of Instructing Written Exam not by the assigned Module: Week readings. Questions can come from any aspect of the FOI Written Text. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain various multiple-choice questions. These quizzes may be taken up to 5 times with unlimited minutes. The highest score will be recorded. (CLO: B, D)

The purpose of this assignment is to prepare a Flight Lesson Plan and a visual and audio lesson presentation regarding a student created flight lesson plan to include applicable references from this course. As a Flight Instructor, the future of Aviation is in the student's hands. Providing a clear lesson is crucial for knowledge attainment and skill performance. The following are required elements of the Flight Lesson Plan Presentation Assignment:

  • Flight Lesson Plan Template: The student is to use the provided “Lesson Plan Template” and create a thorough flight lesson that he/she would present to his/her student. The lesson must be over a flight topic that a flight instructor would need to teach a flight student.
  • PowerPoint Presentation: The student will then create a PowerPoint presentation to “teach” the flight knowledge, concepts, and skills that he/she will use as he/she visually teaches the lesson to the flight student. The student must be sure to use images that will assist in relaying practical real-world skills. A minimum of 2 sources is required.
  • The student will prepare an 8-12 minute video of him/her teaching the lesson he/she has prepared. The student's student can be sitting right beside him/her in the video as he/she teaches or the student can “pretend” his/her student is in the video.

Once the professor watches the lesson, they should fully understand and apply the knowledge and skills the student has taught. (CLO: A, B, C)

As the student progresses through their Flight Training Syllabus at their Flight Training Affiliate, it is very important that the student stays on pace to complete the “Percent of TCO” requirement before the end of the course. To help the student stay fully aware of their own progress and to keep the professor informed, the student will upload the “Percent of TCO Form” verifying “percent of TCO” progress at the midterm and final week of the course. This form will provide crucial information exchanged between all stakeholders (professor, student, and flight instructor/ FTA).

In order to pass this class, the student must complete his/her Flight Instructor Instrument training at an approved Flight Training Affiliate (FTA). Once complete, the student must submit their earned Part 141 Graduation Certificate and either a copy of the FAA Flight Instructor Instrument Certificate (front and back), or Temporary FAA Flight Instructor Instrument Certificate if applicable.
