Course Description

This course covers flight instructor methods and maneuvers in preparation for the FAA Certified Flight Instructor initial evaluation.

Rationale

The purpose of this course is to prepare students to become a Certified Flight Instructor for single engine aircraft. This course meets the requirements for accomplishing the FAA practical examinations for single engine flight instructor. 

Course Assignment

Textbook readings and presentations

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.

Students must submit a 2–3 minute video introduction. The student may use a multi-media platform of choice to record his/her video. However, Kaltura is recommended. Specific elements stated within the discussion prompt must be included. This will be a graded assignment. Students must also reply to at least 2 classmates' introductions. Each reply must contain at least 150 words, including a question or a relevant follow-up response to guide the discussion.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student must complete various Discussions in this course. Each student will post an initial thread of 400-500 words of the assigned Module for each Discussion. In addition, the student must then post 2 replies of 250 words. These are intended to be scholarly dialogues and for each thread, the student must support his/her assertions with at least 2 scholarly sources in APA format with sources listed as References at the end of the post. The FTA Student Handbook provides essential information and requirements for the successful completion of the student's flight training program. This quiz will ask the student to acknowledge that he/she has read the FTA Student Handbook provided in the SOA Flight Student Community as well as any and all information provided within the Liberty University ATLAS website. This quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 1 yes/no question, have a 1-hour time limit, and allow 1 attempt.

As the student progresses through Flight Training Syllabus at his/her Flight Training Affiliate, it is very important that the student stays on pace to complete the course requirements before the end of the term. To help the student stay fully aware of his/her own progress and to keep the professor informed, the student will submit a Flight Course Log Quiz. This is the student’s opportunity to keep a journal of his/her flight training experience and it will serve as a means for the professor to understand how things are going in flight training. Each Flight Course Log Quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 10 essay questions, have a 1-hour time limit, and allow 1 attempt.

The purpose of this assignment is to prepare a Flight Lesson Plan and a 8-12 minute visual and audio lesson presentation regarding a student created flight lesson plan to include applicable references from this course. As a Flight Instructor, the future of aviation is in the student's hands. Providing a clear lesson is crucial for knowledge attainment and skill performance. The following are required elements of the Flight Lesson Plan Presentation Assignment:

  • Flight Lesson Plan Template: The student is to use the provided “Lesson Plan Template” and create a thorough flight lesson that he/she would present to his/her student. The lesson must be over a flight topic that a flight instructor would need to teach a flight student.
  • PowerPoint Presentation: The student will then create a PowerPoint presentation to “teach” the flight knowledge, concepts, and skills that he/she will use as he/she visually teaches the lesson to the flight student. The student must be sure to use images that will assist in relaying practical real-world skills.
  • The student will prepare a video of him/her teaching the lesson he/she has prepared. The student's student can be sitting right beside him/her in the video as he/she teaches or the student can “pretend” his/her student is in the video.

Within the presentation, the student must include and cite from a minimum of 2 appropriate aviation resources. Once the professor watches the lesson, he/she should fully understand and apply the knowledge and skills the student has taught. (CLO: A, B, C, D)

As the student progresses through his/her Flight Training Syllabus at his/her Flight Training Affiliate, it is very important that the student stays on pace to complete the “Percent of TCO” requirement before the end of the course. To help the student stay fully aware of his/her own progress and to keep the professor informed, the student will upload the “Percent of TCO Form” verifying “percent of TCO” progress at the midterm and final week of the course. This form will provide crucial information exchanged between all stakeholders (professor, student, and flight instructor/FTA).

In order to pass this class, the student must complete his/her Flight Instructor training at an approved Flight Training Affiliate (FTA). Once complete, the student must submit a copy of his/her earned Part 141 Graduation Certificate and either a copy of the FAA Flight Instructor Certificate (front and back), or Temporary FAA Flight Instructor Certificate if applicable.  (CLO: A, B, C, D)

The student will write a 2-3 page paper (not including title and references) in APA format reflecting on his/her flight training experience. This experience includes both the academic work completed as well as the % of TCO completed during flight training at the FTA.
