Admission Requirements

  1. Apply online or download an application for admission and submit via mail.
  2. A $50.00, non-refundable, application fee will be assessed at time of application (waived for servicemembers and veterans).
  3. A  Ph.D. graduate status record form.
  4. Official college transcripts (sealed, unopened copies of Undergrad AND Grad degrees).
  5. Possess a regionally or nationally accredited master’s degree that reveals evidence of fulfilling CACREP entry level standards (our current prerequisite courses) with a minimum of 3.25 GPA.Applicants who have a regionally accredited master's in a related field (i.e., counseling, psychology, human services) are welcome to apply; however, if admitted, you will be required to complete M.A. level prerequisite courses listed on the Degree Completion Plan before taking any Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision courses.
  6. Recommended Test Scores:
  7. Two Recommendations from professionals familiar with applicant’s work and character.
  8. 300-word letter of intent.
  9. Professional vita, indicating counseling licensure, or, a minimum of at least one year of clinical experience in the counseling field with a commitment to obtain counseling licensure prior to graduation from the program.
  10. Vignette. An APA formatted research paper of 4-5 pages length (not including title page, abstract, and references) on a topic related to clinical mental health counseling.
  11. Selected applicants may be required to participate in a personal interview with core Ph.D. program faculty.
  12. Applicants whose native language is not English must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or an approved alternate test of English proficiency: International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or the International Test of English Proficiency (iTEP). Applicants must earn a score of 80 on the Internet-based TOEFL, a 3.9 on the iTEP, a 6.5 on the IELTS, or an equivalent score on an approved alternate test for all graduate degree programs.  Applicants who have an earned degree from a college or university in the U.S. or other English-speaking country or school may have the TOEFL requirement waived by the Office of Graduate Admissions. Alternatively, applicants who successfully complete the levels of English-Second-Language (ESL) instruction indicated below at one of two schools will have the TOEFL requirement waived.  Students will have their application held until transcripts from one of the below schools are received.

Preliminary Acceptance

If you are sending in a preliminary transcript for acceptance, you must:

  • Be in your final term and planning to start your doctoral degree after the last day of class for your master's degree.
  • Submit a transcript to confirm that you are in your final term.
  • Send in an additional, final official transcript with a conferral date on it by the end of your first semester of enrollment.

Official College Transcript Policy

An acceptable official college transcript must be issued directly from the institution in a sealed envelope with a signature across the back. If you have one in your possession, it must meet the same requirements.


Program Dates and Deadlines

Applicants to the Counselor Education and Supervision program may apply at any time, keeping in mind the following deadlines:

Fall-starting applicants:

  • Initial application deadline: April 30
  • Extended material collection deadline: July 1
  • All decisions made by department: July 20
  • Fall start date is usually August 20-25 (varies each year)
     

Spring-starting applicants:

  • Initial application deadline: September 30
  • Extended material collection deadline: November 1
  • All decisions made by department: November 20
  • Spring start date is usually January 15-18 (varies each year)
