CGRM101: Conversational German I

Course Description

This is an introductory course designed to develop practical conversational German skills. Intended for students whose first language is not German and/or have no previous German training and/or experience.

Rationale

The ultimate goal of this course is to enable the student to communicate effectively in German. The focus is on the development of the four communicative skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing (in order of priority). Because German is the most widely spoken native language in Europe and ranks number three among all second languages studied worldwide, knowledge of this language opens unique doors of opportunity in fields such as Christian service, education, international relations, scientific research, technology, and world commerce.

Discussions (2)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. The student will discuss cultural and other aspects of Germany and the German language while integrating Christian worldview perspectives. The student is required to write a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each thread must contain at least 100 words. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 25 words. (CLO: B; FSLO: CGE 1, 2, 3, 4, 5; CIL 2)

Discussion: All About Me

The student will record answers in German to provided questions. The student will then submit his/her recording as his/her thread. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads, giving encouragement and specific feedback on their recordings. (CLO: B, D; FSLO: CGE 1, 2, 3, 4, 5; CIL 1, 2, 3)

Rosetta Stone Assignments (4)

In this course, the student will complete Rosetta Stone Units 1–4 in Level 1.

The student will complete all 4 lessons (for a total of 32 exercises) and the Milestone in each unit. The lessons will address listening, speaking, reading, and writing as well as vocabulary and sentence structure. Completing all of the lessons will prepare the student to complete each milestone assignment successfully. Each exercise must be finished with a Rosetta Stone score of 70% or higher to be considered complete. (CLO: A, B, C; FSLO: CIL 2, 3)

Quiz: Rosetta Stone Live Tutoring Session (3)

The student will complete 3 Live Tutoring sessions within the Rosetta Stone program to develop fluency in understanding and speaking German. After each Live Tutoring Session, the student will complete a quiz to verify completion of the session and attach the RS report showing the completed tutoring time. (CLO: C, D, E; FSLO: CIL 1, 3)

Grammar Quizzes (6)

There will be 6 quizzes throughout the course that will assess the student’s knowledge of the grammar concepts covered in the textbook. Each quiz is open-book/open-notes, contains 10 multiple-choice, matching, ordering, or true/false questions, and has a 20-minute time limit. (CLO: B, C, D)

Quiz: Practice for Final Oral Exam

The student will complete this practice for the Final Oral Exam in order to get familiar with the types of questions to expect and the technology needed to submit video responses to the questions. The student will review responses to the previous speaking discussion in German and other class materials to prepare for the this practice quiz. (CLO: B, C, D, E; CGE: 5)

Quiz: Final Oral Exam

This listening and speaking quiz consists of a number of questions the student will answer with a speaking video, applying the appropriate vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation learned through Rosetta Stone and the textbook (CLO: B, C, D, E; FSLO: CIL 1,3)
