Liberty University Online Academy (LUOA) would like to introduce you to Trier Forseth. She agreed to answer a few questions about her personal experience as an LUOA Student Clubs Sponsor for our Science Club!

Tell us about yourself! What LUOA club do you sponsor? How are you affiliated with LUOA?

Hello everyone! My name is Trier Forseth and I am an LUOA High School Biology teacher. I absolutely love working with the Science Club!

Why did you decide to start the club that you did?

Many discoveries in science are built on collaboration. So, with virtual education being a bit more isolated, I thought Science Club would be a great way for students to build community through the exploration of science topics that interest them.

Why did you decide to become a club sponsor?

Currently, I only teach for LUOA and I miss the sense of community typically found in a brick-and-mortar school. Developing lessons/activities allows me to be creative and because it is a virtual platform, I’ve had to explore/develop technological options that allow everyone to participate.

What’s your favorite thing about being a club sponsor LUOA?

I love listening to the kids brainstorm and share ideas about the variety of science topics.

What is the coolest project you have done/have planned for your club?

I can’t choose a favorite! We did experiment demos, virtual scavenger hunts, collaborative Google presentations, etc. The students explored topics such as Bioengineering, Movie Science, Hot Topics, STEAM Careers, and we even had a guest speaker.

What’s the biggest lesson you feel like you have learned being a club sponsor and the biggest lesson your students have learned being a part of an LUOA club?

Providing student choice and giving them a space to share their thoughts while exploring topics that interest them is essential. They are more engaged when the topic is something they’ve chosen. Keep asking questions, seeking answers, and relying on God to guide your path!

Why should an LUOA student join your club (or any of our clubs)?

Science Club is an extension of their educational journey and it should be a reflection of them so, I’m always asking for feedback about what went well and how they want to move forward. Per student request, this year we are going to have two meetings a month. One meeting will be based on an experiment or demo and the other meeting will focus on topics the students choose. Students don’t have to attend both meetings, but I know they have busy schedules and this will allow them a couple of options, Overall, if students are looking for a fun way to explore science and share their thoughts then this is the club for them!
