Liberty community mourns loss of N.J. siblings
A Liberty University student and her brother who was planning to attend Liberty this fall died Thursday, July 26, as a result of their injuries from a house fire on Wednesday, July 25, in Paterson, N.J.
Liberty’s records show Alexandra Velarde, 23, transferred to the university in Fall 2011 and was a senior Bio/Chemistry major. Her brother, Christian Velasquez, 19, was also planning on transferring and would have been a new residential student this fall.
“The Liberty University community was heartbroken to hear of this tragedy. We extend our condolences and our prayers to the family and friends of Alexandra and Christian,” Liberty Chancellor and President Jerry Falwell, Jr. said.
Liberty’s Student Affairs Office has been working with the family during their time of loss and a memorial service is being planned after students return for the fall semester.
A wake is being held today at their church in Paterson and a burial is planned for Wednesday.
