Priscilla Shirer speaks in Friday convocation

Women’s speaker, author and founder of Going Beyond Ministries Priscilla Shirer challenged Liberty University students at Friday’s convocation to look to the story of Joshua in the Bible to become fearless, “one-in-a-million” believers.

“I want to encourage you to have a Joshua spirit — to be men and women who will not only act immediately in obedience to God but then who also determine to act fearlessly in the face of what seem like insurmountable odds,” she said.

Going Beyond Ministries is focused on Bible teaching and holds events for women across the country several times a year. The ministry strives to help women understand the Scriptures intellectually as well as apply and experience them practically.

In addition to teaching Christian audiences, Shirer has been a featured conference speaker for many major corporations and organizations around the world. She is also the author of several books, including “A Jewel in His Crown,” “And We Are Changed: Transforming Encounters with a Transforming God,” “He Speaks To Me,” and “Discerning the Voice of God.” She has also collaborated with LifeWay Christian Resources to create five video-driven Bible studies. Friday was her first time speaking at Liberty.

Solo artist Anthony Evans, a 2000 Liberty alumnus, performs in convocation. Evans is Shirer’s brother.

Shirer was joined in convocation by her brother, Anthony Evans, a 2000 Liberty alumnus who sang on the Sounds of Liberty ministry team while at Liberty. After graduation, Evans toured for four years with gospel singer Kirk Franklin. He has been a solo artist for the past six years and has released four albums. He performed two songs in Friday’s convocation and introduced his sister.

“Other than Beth Moore, I am very proud to say this, my sister is the most sought-after women’s speaker in the world right now,” Evans said.

In her message, Shirer read from Joshua 3. Joshua was not intimidated by God’s command to lead 2 million Israelites across the Jordan River and into the Promised Land, she said, but acted immediately in obedience to God.

“I think that oftentimes we hinder our own progress in terms of an experiential relationship with God not because God is limited, but because we are limiting His activity in our life because we won’t obey, we just won’t do what He’s asking us to do,” she said.

Shirer said that as Christians, God has already “set us up to win.”

“If He has called us to do something, it is not because we are already equipped, but because He will equip obedient people who are willing to do what He asks.”
She also encouraged students to acknowledge God before acting on His will for their lives, and not to let a spirit of fear keep them from experiencing the things God is pushing them to experience.

“One of the ways the enemy keeps you and I from achieving whatever God’s purpose and His plan and His will is for our lives is to simply stamp a spirit of fear on the very thing that He knows is the last thing you need to conquer before you get into the Promised Land,” Shirer said.

Shirer began her speaking ministry through women’s small group Bible studies in 1993 while she was a freshman at the University of Houston. She went on to earn a master’s degree in Biblical Studies from Dallas Theological Seminary. Shirer lives in Dallas, Texas, with her husband, Jerry, and their three sons.
