Falwells join in the fun at Christmas Convocation

On Wednesday, the Liberty University student body celebrated the end of the semester with the annual tradition of Christmas Convocation, which kicks off finals week. The Vines Center was decked with Christmas decorations as students — many dressed in their favorite holiday pajamas and outfits — sang Christmas carols, watched parody skits performed by the Office of Spiritual Development staff, and viewed funny videos about student life at Liberty.

However, a real festive surprise came when Liberty President Jerry Falwell and his wife, Becki, showed up dressed in matching Christmas outfits featuring Christmas puppies. (The Falwells became the new parents of two Golden Retriever puppies last summer.)

“The best part about Christmas Convo was seeing our president and his wife in their hilarious Christmas attire. Who doesn’t love puppies?” said graduate student Sarah Gump.

The Falwells took time after the event to meet with students and pose for pictures.

“I don’t know what the students enjoyed more — the mistletoe my son shot out of the trees or us dressed in goofy puppy suits, but the entire event was festive and I hope a great stress reliever at exam time,” President Falwell said. “The family atmosphere on campus is unique at Liberty and is a big part of what makes the school special. Celebrating with the students is the favorite part of the job for Becki and me.”

“Celebrating Christmas with our students is always important to us, and dressing up this year for Christmas Convocation was so much fun,” Becki Falwell added. “We love spending time with our Liberty family; we have the best college students in the world. They love God, love each other, and love to serve people. We are so blessed at Liberty.”

David Nasser, Liberty’s senior vice president for spiritual development who heads up Convocation, said the Falwells’ presence at the last Convocation of the semester is just one example out of many throughout the year where they engage in student events.

“President Falwell and Mrs. Falwell are always looking for special ways to be involved in student life at Liberty,” he said. “They are our students’ biggest supporters, and they know how to make their whole experience here exciting and memorable. We are grateful to have leaders who are so in tune with our students, and can have a lot of fun with it, too.”

Liberty hosts a variety of Christmas-themed events to help students ring in the season together, starting with the annual tree lighting on Nov. 27.

The Fall 2017 Semester officially ends on Dec. 22. Spring semester classes begin Jan. 22.
