‘Christmas in Lights’ kicks off holiday season

November 30, 2010 : Office of Promotional Publications

Liberty University officially began its Christmas festivities Monday night with a “Christmas in Lights” celebration in front of DeMoss Hall.

Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. welcomed students to Liberty’s first tree-lighting ceremony.

"We've always decorated a lot indoors -- our employees decorate Campus North, you've always decorated your dorm rooms -- but we've never done any outdoor decorations.  ... We're just so excited that this is the first year of a tradition that will continue at Liberty for years."

Falwell, his wife Becki and their family lit the 30-foot tree while students counted down.

The tree was purchased from a farm in Pennsylvania and will stand in front of DeMoss Hall until Christmas. It will be lit up each night after dark. The school is also installing a nativity scene "so the whole world can see we're celebrating the birth of Christ here at Liberty University," Falwell said.

The event, hosted by Student Activities, drew about 1,200 students, faculty and staff and included Christmas carols by orchestra and choral ensembles and free hot chocolate.

The event also marked the beginning of the dorm decoration competition and students had a chance to win a pair of Christmas Coffeehouse tickets by participating in an ugly Christmas sweater contest.
