Debate Team wins CEDA national championship

04/18/2017

Liberty University’s Debate Team finished ahead of George Mason University and Cornell University, respectively, to win its eighth Cross Examination Debate Association (CEDA) national tournament championship in a row.

“I’m incredibly proud of this team,” said Michael Hall, Liberty’s director of debate. “We started the season strong but faded a bit at the start of the spring semester. As a result, we needed a big finish to clinch the championship. Our debaters responded to the pressure by posting our two strongest tournaments of the year.”

This year, Liberty also competed nationally in the American Debate Association (ADA) and National Debate Tournament (NDT) and awaits the final rankings. Liberty was last year’s ADA runner-up and was the NDT champion for the sixth time in seven years. Before last year, Liberty won 12-straight ADA titles. Liberty remains the only school in the country to finish first in all three rankings (ADA, CEDA, NDT) in a single year.

This year’s debate topic was “Resolved: The United States Federal Government should establish a domestic climate policy, including at least substantially increasing restrictions on private sector emissions of greenhouse gases in the United States.” Examples of arguments students researched and presented are cap and trade policies, carbon taxes, and renewable fuel standards.
