Virginia Lt. Gov. Bolling addresses Boys State

Virginia Lt. Gov. William Bolling visited Liberty University today to address almost 800 rising high school seniors for the 68th Session of Virginia Boys State. Boys State is an educational organization that teaches high school boys about local, county and state government. The sessions have been held on Liberty’s campus for 21 years.

Bolling, who is serving his second term as lieutenant governor, told students that “I always look forward to this opportunity — this is one of my favorite days of the year. I get to come to Lynchburg and start the day visiting with Boys State.

He congratulated the audience for being a part of the program, as he participated in West Virginia’s Boys State and felt the experience has helped him throughout his life and political career. He said that being interested in government is an exceptional quality for young people to have.

“It is important that we are engaged in the process of democracy,” said Bolling. “We have what we call a participatory democracy that only works if you do what? Participate in the process.

After a short address, Bolling opened the floor for a question-and-answer session with the students. When a student asked what has helped him attain success, he said, “The most important thing that you can do is figure out what you believe in … Regardless of where you may be coming from on the political spectrum, if there’s one piece of advice I can give you, it’s ‘Know what you believe in, and be willing to stand up to fight for what you believe in whether it’s easy or it’s hard.

Bolling is one of several dignitaries to speak at this year’s Boys State, held June 20-26 at Liberty. Other guests include Virginia’s Gov. Robert McDonnell and Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli.
