ABC News films Snowflex segment

Filming at LMSCThe Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre has been drawing a lot of attention since it opened to the public on Aug. 2. ABC News traveled to Liberty Mountain this week to shoot a segment on the year-round ski slope — which is the first of its kind in America.

LU students were on hand to cheer as skiers and snowboarders exhibited tricks for the camera on the main slope’s kicker jumps, quarter pipe and grind rails.

“I’m excited for what Snowflex will do for the school,” Liberty graduate and seminary student Rachel Richardson said. “I think it will attract so many more people, and it will provide a wonderful avenue for the students to come and relax.”

The Virginia Travel and Tourism board was also present to check out the attraction that is listed under “Things to Do” on the state tourism website.

“It’s addictive,” Becki Falwell said while watching her husband, Chancellor Jerry Falwell, Jr. go down the slopes on his skis. “You go down once, and you want to go down again. I hope all LU students come and experience the great atmosphere and good clean fun, especially those who have never skied or snowboarded before.”

After a year of anticipation, the Snowflex Centre grand opening ceremony will take place on Saturday, Aug. 29. The event will feature an exhibition of jumps and tricks by professional riders from the U.S. and U.K. Guests will also be able to test out the slopes and enjoy on-site food, sportswear and accessories vendors.

The video segment will be posted on the ABC News website this week and will air at a later date.

Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre was included in Friday’s print version of USA Today, and is also featured on USA Today’s website under Travel Destinations.
