Discovery Channel films at Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre

A Discovery Channel video crew stopped by Liberty University’s year-round ski slope on Thursday, gathering footage for the hit Canadian series “Daily Planet.”

The show provides viewers a sneak peek of fascinating technologies throughout the world and explains the science behind them.

“We’re going to look at the Snowflex system … and show people how it is made, the technology behind it and how much fun it can be,” said Shannon Bentley, a producer for the show.

Invented by Brian Thomas of Briton Engineering, Snowflex is a multi-layer, synthetic material that simulates the effects of snow, allowing maximum speed and edge control for turns. This innovative technology is making its North American debut at Liberty’s high-tech terrain park.

During their stay, Discovery Channel’s cameramen captured intense footage of skiers and snowboarders testing out the slope’s freestyle features. Two professional riders, Christian Allen and Shayne Pospisil, also made the trek to LU, performing high-flying maneuvers off the Snowflex Centre’s huge jumps.

LU will hold a grand opening ceremony for the Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre on Aug. 29. The action begins with professional riders from the U.S. and U.K. performing big-air stunts on the slope’s freestyle features. Following the extreme expo, guests are invited to ski, snowboard and tube down Liberty Mountain. On-site vendors will also be available, offering food, sportswear and accessories.
