Campus swarms with campers this summer

One would expect a college campus to be vacant during summer break, but that’s not the case at Liberty University. Several camps and conferences for young people are keeping Liberty a hub of activity in Central Virginia.

High school students worship in the Supreme Courtroom at Liberty University School of Law for the Summit Ministries’ conference, June 21-July 3. The conference challenges students to examine their worldviews, evaluate those views as they pertain to the current post-Christian culture, and encourage them to respond. Students engaged with national experts delving into significant issues, such as post modernism, politics, Christianity in culture, the reliability of Scripture, creation vs. evolution, and others.

More than 30 different camps and conferences are being held on the Liberty University campus during a six-week period this summer, from sports camps such as volleyball and soccer, to academic, including debate and Virginia’s Boys State program, as well as ministry and youth camps.

Ernest Carter, Liberty’s director of event management, said Liberty is an attractive option for these programs.

“Liberty’s a great place because of the great facilities we have here. They really appeal to a diverse group of people, from the LaHaye Student Union to the LaHaye Ice Center to the other top-notch facilities, like worship areas, and all the technology that’s in all these areas,” he said. “It sets us apart from other colleges and universities because of all the variety of things we have to offer here at Liberty.”

The university offers everything from day camps to full-service options — campers can stay in the residence halls, eat at all the dining facilities and use the student recreation areas.

“We’re really big about customer service and making each conference feel like they are No. 1 here,” Carter said. “We get a lot of great feedback from the groups about services we provide and the friendliness of the employees here at the university. And they like the wholesomeness of the Christian environment that they can come to.”

Some campers make use of the recreational opportunities in the region as well. Missions-oriented camps are making Liberty their headquarters but are venturing out into the community for projects.

Students at Debate Camp watch a practice debate by Liberty University’s Debate Team in the Debate Center on June 23.

Carter said the summer camps and conferences also give young people a chance to experience living on a college campus and to consider Liberty for their own education someday.

Representatives from Liberty’s recruitment office are on hand this summer to welcome the visiting groups to campus and address them during their events, offering information about attending Liberty.
