Liberty community gives blood, saves lives

For over 20 years Liberty University has participated in the American Red Cross Blood Drive, sponsored by the Circle K Club. In the past school year, more than 1,800 students, faculty and staff donated more than 1,300 units of blood, according to Lew Weider, Liberty’s Christian/Community Service director and its blood drive coordinator.

Melanie Campbell, account manager for Red Cross Appalachian Blood Services and a Liberty alumna, said: “LU is one of the best colleges in our region for giving back to the community through blood donations. The students, faculty and staff put forth an amazing effort to make this happen for the Red Cross.”

Campbell said in the past three years, the level of donations received by the local Red Cross has increased nearly 20 percent. The region, with nine representatives covering 47 counties and 36 local hospitals, has an annual goal of about 74,000 units of blood each year. Liberty sets the goal of contributing about 2,000 units each academic year. If Liberty reaches its goal, about 4,000 lives could be saved or extended, she said.

“In order to make any of this possible, it must first be supported by the leadership at LU,” Campbell said. “And for that we are exceedingly grateful, as are the many lives that were saved or extended through the participation of everyone from the top down. We will come back as often as we can.”
