Class of ’09 raises money for new theater

Each year, Liberty University’s senior class takes on a project to make its mark on campus. The Class of 2009 chose a “dramatic” project — raising funds for Liberty’s new 700-seat performing arts theater to be built in the Campus North tower.

The senior class, in partnership with Liberty’s Student Alumni Association, has raised $7,388. Donations were accepted through graduation weekend. Every student who contributed the suggested donation amount of $10 received a free T-shirt.

Chancellor Jerry Falwell, Jr. announced the theater project at a convocation earlier this spring. He said it was a great need, as the current theater located on main campus is a renovated lecture hall that seats 250. With as many as six main-stage productions a year, tickets are sold out for almost every show. The new theater will allow more people to view the shows in a more convenient and comfortable location.

It will also train young Champions for Christ who will step into the front line of America’s culture war, he said, adding that he is excited to see the 80-foot-tall industrial tower — visible throughout the city — become a high-profile arts venue producing not cellular phones but sellout performances.
