Sam Chelanga breaks NCAA 10K record

Liberty redshirt sophomore Sam Chelanga closed out the inaugural New York Road Runners Distance Carnival with an exclamation point, late Friday evening at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational in Berkeley, Calif. Chelanga won the men’s 10,000 meters, breaking the all-time NCAA record (as recognized by Track & Field News) with a world-leading 27:28.48 clocking and defeating five Olympians in the process.

Chelanga (Nairobi, Kenya), who entered the race with a 10K personal best of 28:15.99, shaved exactly five seconds off of the existing collegiate standard, 27:33.48, set by Oregon’s Galen Rupp on April 29, 2007. Henry Rono of Washington State ran a 27:22.4 10K in Vienna, Austria on June 11, 1978, but his mark is not recognized by Track & Field News, because it was achieved outside the NCAA collegiate season.
