Pinning ceremony blesses nursing grads to healing work

After years of rigorous academic training, graduates of the Liberty University Department of Nursing were able to breathe a sigh of relief and relish their accomplishments at the biannual pinning ceremony Dec. 14 in the Towns Alumni Center.

In all, 71 graduates of Liberty’s residential B.S.N. program were recognized at the ceremony, as well as seven M.S.N. and two R.N. to B.S.N. graduates from Liberty’s online nursing programs. Several more graduated from the online programs but were unable to attend.

This year, the department inaugurated a “Blessing of the Hands” at the ceremony. Graduates received a prayer of blessing from faculty members, who then anointed their hands with oil.

“We view nursing as a ministry of carrying out the healing work of Jesus (so) we feel this is a meaningful and significant way to send out our graduates,” said Dr. Deanna Britt, chair of the nursing department.

Students who graduated with their B.S.N. will go on to take their National Council Licensure Examination to become registered nurses. The department’s last graduating class boasted a 97 percent pass rate — Liberty’s highest ever.

Liberty’s bachelor’s and master’s level nursing degrees offer quality education with a Christian worldview. In addition to these degrees, Liberty also offers two critical care certificate programs designed to give students interested in critical care or maternal/child critical care a head start in their careers.
