Indoor soccer complex to open May 1

Come May 1, there’s no chance of bad weather stopping soccer games at Liberty University.

The grand opening of the Thomas Indoor Soccer Center kicks off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 5 p.m., featuring Glen Thomas, the donor who made the facility possible. The turf will see its first “off-the-wall” action beginning at 7 p.m. with a series of exhibition games.

“We just want students to come and enjoy the facility that’s been given to us,” said Andrea Sherwood, LU’s student centers director. “We’re just really excited to have the opportunity to present this to them.”

Connected to Campus North’s LaHaye Student Union, the facility consists of two turf fields partially surrounded by clear walls, with a spectator section in between. Other features will include wireless capability and televisions.

Crews are currently installing the artificial turf and completing finishing touches to the facility. Liberty Men’s Soccer Coach Jeff Alder said he and his team are excited about the new recreational opportunities the center brings to the campus.

“I can’t wait until May 1 gets here,” Alder stated. “For us to have this on our campus is a huge benefit to the students here at Liberty because there are so many kids that come from soccer backgrounds.”

Two tournaments (men’s and women’s) will take place on Saturday, May 2 (with exhibition games on Friday, May 1). Each participating squad will be coached by a Liberty men’s or women’s soccer player. Students may sign up under the player of their choice at www.ultimatelu.com. The cost is $25 per team, with proceeds going toward mission trips for LU’s men’s and women’s soccer programs. Deadline to register is Tuesday April 28 at 4 p.m. For more information, call 592-3221.
