History major earns high honor

Brandi Hatfield, a junior history major at Liberty University, was recently selected as a Gilder Lehrman Institute Scholar. Hatfield is one of 50 students selected from a pool of more than 240 applicants across the country to join the competitive summer scholarship program in American history for outstanding college sophomores and juniors.

The program, inaugurated in 2003 and based in New York City, has been designed to reward undergraduates who have demonstrated superb research and writing skills in American history and to provide an opportunity for the next generation of historians to engage in discussions with eminent scholars and in primary-source research.

Hatfield was invited to the seminar, June 13-20, and will have a chance to visit New York’s historical sites and interact with some of the country’s leading historians. This year’s program will focus on Abraham Lincoln and the students will work with scholars such as James McPherson, Eric Foner and Catherine Clinton.
