Report showing academic progress to be displayed at annual SACS meeting

On the heels of receiving a glowing review from its accrediting agency, Liberty University has learned a report it filed will be among the documents on display at the agency’s annual meeting in Dallas, Texas, in December.

Liberty was notified in August that the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges fully accepted its Fifth-Year Interim Report with “no additional reporting” requested, which is considered to be a notable accomplishment for any university.

SACS recently requested that Liberty’s complete report be included in the Resource Room at its annual meeting Dec. 8-11, where other institutions can study best practices.

Several hundred schools from the SACS region (Virginia to Kentucky to Texas) are represented at the meeting each year. Liberty is sending representatives from its Office of Institutional Effectiveness, which compiled the data for the 201-page report.

“It certainly should be a source of pride for our faculty and students to know that Liberty’s report will be reviewed by other schools as a learning tool — a model and example of what are considered to be “best practices” in higher education for the thorough examination of every aspect of an institution of higher learning,” said Chancellor Jerry Falwell, Jr. “Our Provost, Dr. Ron Godwin, and his Office of Institutional Effectiveness are setting the standard for the academic leadership at other institutions to emulate.”

While SACS requires an even more rigorous self-study report every 10 years, schools must also complete a report every five years, proving they have met 17 of the most demanding Principles of Accreditation in every area, from academic programs to financial aid, administrative leadership, and student services — for both its residential and online programs.

The fully accepted review from SACS, is not only confirmation that Liberty is meeting the most challenging standards, but also solidly positions the university for its full compliance report, which will include responses to 96 standards and must be submitted by September 2015.

Liberty University was first accredited by SACS in 1980. In 2009, Liberty received Level VI accreditation, the highest classification from SACS reserved for colleges and universities that offer four or more doctoral degrees.
