Students earn engineering scholarships at Robotics Challenge

The Liberty University School of Engineering and Computational Sciences held its first annual Robotics Challenge on Saturday, March 28, in the Vines Center. Thirteen teams from various Christian high schools along with home-schooled students participated in the competition.

Each team designed and built a robot to cover a straight 30-foot distance in the quickest time. Thirty-four students competed for the top award of an $8,000 engineering scholarship to Liberty University. Timothy Vernon and Mark Jones, local home school students, had the winning time of 4.28 seconds. The second place team of Joe Bruzek, Anthony Garbarini, and William Loftus from Holy Cross Regional School, finished at 5.18 seconds.

Dr. Feng Wang, Assistant Professor of Engineering, conceived the idea for a robotics competition last year with the hope of hosting the event this spring. Several regional and national corporations sponsored the event.
