In the first week of the RecycleMania 2008 campaign in February, Liberty University collected roughly 5 tons of paper and cardboard, equaling about half a pound per person on campus.
By the end of the 10-week program, Liberty collected nearly 26 tons of paper and 38 tons of cardboard — diverting more than 64 tons of waste from the local landfill and saving the university about $2,250 in landfill fees. The recyclable materials collected by the university generated more than $5,300 in revenue.
Liberty entered the contest along with 372 other colleges nationwide with the purpose of establishing a campus-wide recycling program and carrying forward the biblical concept of good stewardship.
