If the Liberty University campus looks even more pristine than usual, it’s because more than 15 seniors from a local Christian school were on garbage patrol Tuesday afternoon.
Armed with trash bags and long-handled pick-up tools, the students from Timberlake Christian Schools in Forest, Va., collected stray litter on university grounds to show their appreciation for a special scholarship to Liberty that a majority of the 21 students in their graduating class will use.
Seniors who attend Timberlake Christian Schools for four years get a 75 percent discount to LU, explained school principal Fred Heppding.
“We thought this would be an opportunity to show our appreciation,” said 18-year-old Heather Thomas, who will major in nursing at LU this fall.
Timberlake students have received the scholarship for many years — but they wanted to do something unique this year to express their gratitude.
“We are impressed by Timberlake’s act of appreciation today. That says a lot for the school,” said LU Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr.
David Hamel, a 1983 Liberty University alumnus who sent his children to Timberlake Christian Schools, helped organize the project.
