Bob Coy speaks at Wednesday convocation

Bob Coy, founder and senior pastor of Calvary Chapel Ft. Lauderdale, spoke at Liberty University’s Wednesday convocation encouraging students to stay focused on the vision and call of God’s will on their lives.

After working for several years in the music industry, Coy left his job at age 24 and began his first ministry position as associate pastor of Calvary Chapel in Las Vegas. He later moved to Ft. Lauderdale with his wife, Diane, and began Calvary Chapel of Ft. Lauderdale.

Citing 1 Corinthians 10, Coy told Liberty students to stay away from three major areas: idolatry, sexual immorality and complaining.

He read Ezekiel 14:2-3, which says, “Then the word of the Lord came to me: ‘Son of man, these men have set up idols in their hearts and put wicked stumbling blocks before their faces. Should I let them inquire of me at all?’”

He said Christians should be constantly asking themselves if they are truly pursuing the will of God or if they are being distracted by idols that come in and out of their lives.

“If you don’t at some point lay down that idol, sadly that idol is what you get,” Coy said.

He then talked about the story of Lot in the Bible and how God destroyed the city of Sodom because of sexual immorality.

“The minute you grab hold of that sexual immorality — the next time you see the vision and burden of God, you’re going to say to yourself, ‘I can’t do that. I’m undone. I’m guilty,’” he said.

In the area of complaining, Coy said this can lead Christians to have a negative attitude on life.

“[God’s call] doesn’t belong in the hands of a whiner; this belongs in the hands of a champion who knows who they are in God and that in His perfect timing all things work together for good,” he said.

Coy closed by saying he is part of a generation seeking young Christians to take over what they have started. He encouraged students to develop strong friendships and relationships that encourage them to take up the vision and call of God’s will on their lives.

“Someone needs to take this truth to the next generation,” he said.
