Liberty University kicks off Missions Emphasis Week

Liberty University’s Fall Missions Conference is set to kick off Monday with a focus on the disasters that shake up our everyday lives. With the theme of “Rescue,” Missions Emphasis Week (MEW) is set to encourage students to embrace a compassion for spreading the Gospel to the “least reached” people of the world.

“The goal for having MEW is to connect students with missionaries so that they can better understand the part they need to play in the Great Commission, something that God’s Word commands every believer to be involved in,” said Lindsay Taylor, associate administrator of Liberty’s Center for Global Ministries.

Missionary leaders on campus will join with representatives from Liberty’s six mission agency partners in teaching students how they can play an active role in missions. The evening seminars will cover subjects from sports to nursing and focus on how students can bring the goal of missions into their individual careers.

“It’s not just for missions majors or those going to the field long term. It’s designed to be an event that every student can benefit from,” Taylor said.

Monday and Wednesday convocations will also have a missions focus.

Carrie McDonnall, founder of Carry on Ministries, was Monday’s speaker. As the survivor of a horrific incident in Iraq involving the loss of her husband, she will be sharing her difficult experiences and how they are a testimony to the love of Christ.

Jim O’Neill, the outgoing President of CrossWorld and former Director of Missions at LU, will share the experiences he had during the 13 years he spent as a church planter in the Philippines when he speaks at Wednesday’s convocation.

During last year’s MEW, more than 1,200 students made commitments toward accepting roles in advancing the goal of missions.
