LU supporter to receive top award

Liberty University Board of Trustees member Harvey Gainey has been selected as a Civic Leader Award winner and will be honored at the 23rd Annual Governor’s Awards for Arts & Culture (The Guvvys) on Nov. 13 at the Detroit Institute of Art. The award is given to those who display strong leadership in the support and promotion of Michigan arts and culture.

“I cannot think of anyone who deserves this award more than Harvey Gainey,” said Liberty University Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. “Harvey Gainey is a successful businessman who always kept his faith, his family and service to others his first priorities. Liberty University greatly appreciates Harvey Gainey’s friendship and congratulates him for this well deserved award.”

Falwell said Harvey has been a loyal supporter of LU, giving sacrificially to the university at a time when it was struggling financially.
“He is one of a handful of donors who were key to placing the university on the firm financial foundation that it enjoys today,” he said.

Harvey and his wife, Ereveene, have been close personal friends of the Falwell family for many years, he said, and made a special trip from Michigan shortly after the late Dr. Jerry Falwell died to spend the day with his wife, Macel Falwell.

Gainey is an executive at the Gainey Corporation, one of Michigan’s fastest growing freight companies, and donates his time to community work with the Hope Lodge, the Gainey Family YMCA and WOODTV Angel Tree. As a board chairman of Broadway Grand Rapids (BGR) since 2001, he developed the Broadway in Education program, awarding free tickets to local schools, as well as the Broadway Grand Rapids Grand Awards Scholarship, which awards more than $120,000 to those who give outstanding contributions to the arts.
