Virginia Supreme Court Chief Justice speaks at law school

Virginia Supreme Court Chief Justice Leroy Hassell, Sr., gave a presentation at Liberty University School of Law on Thursday.

In February 2002, Hassell was appointed as the first African-American Chief Justice of the Virginia Supreme Court and the first to be chosen by the other members of the court. According to Hassell, “Diversity is important, and since I’ve been Chief Justice I’ve pushed for racial diversity, gender diversity, religious diversity, geographic diversity. You will find no committee that I have appointed in which we failed to include judges from all parts of the state geographically.”

As Chief Justice, Hassell presides when lawyers argue their cases before the court and at conferences of the seven justices. He is also the head of the state judicial system with many administrative and ceremonial responsibilities. He oversees the budget for the state judiciary and represents the court at inaugurations and other observances.
