Chancellor Falwell speaks on Liberty Live radio program

Liberty University Chancellor Jerry Falwell, Jr. was a guest Wednesday afternoon on the new radio show Liberty Live, broadcast from the LU campus.

The weekday, hour-long call-in radio show on political and cultural news débuted Jan. 19 on hundreds of American Family Radio’s Talk network stations. Mathew Staver, Dean of Liberty University School of Law and founder of Liberty Counsel, co-hosts the show with Matt Barber, Associate Dean for Career and Professional Development at the law school.

During Wednesday’s program, Falwell, Staver and Barber discussed an article Falwell recently wrote in “Charisma Magazine” titled “Don’t Play Dead,” in which he encouraged Christians to continue to be active in the political world.

“I heard the other day that during the Revolutionary War days it was a minority of citizens who wanted to go to war with Britain,” Falwell said on the air. “It only takes a few who are willing to fight for what they believe to make a difference.”

Falwell said conservative Christians should be involved in politics because many moral issues, such as sexuality, have become political issues in the last century. He believes that conservative Christians can make a difference in politics if they truly believe in a politician or an issue.

“Conservatives Christians haven’t gone anywhere … it’s the Republicans that have gone somewhere,” Falwell said, referencing the 2008 presidential election. “When [Republicans] don’t govern conservatively there is no reason to vote for them and they can’t win [elections] without conservative Christians. I know John McCain was conservative in a lot of areas, but he just wasn’t perceived as a warrior for Christian conservative values, and I think that was the reason that he wasn’t successful. [Conservatives] are looking for someone like Ronald Reagan who unashamedly ran on conservative principles.”

Liberty Live features political and religious leaders and is sponsored by Liberty Counsel, Liberty University and the Liberty Alliance Action. Sarah Seitz, Legal Director for the Liberty Center for Law & Policy in Washington, D.C., provides a weekly Liberty Live update on public policy from the capital.
