Food drive supports area families

Liberty University students collected more than 600 pounds of food for residents in Southside Virginia in a one-hour food drive during Wednesday’s convocation in the Vines Center.

The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank will distribute the food in Appomattox County in the coming weeks.

This is the first year Liberty has partnered with the Food Bank, which serves 25 counties and nine cities on either side of the Blue Ridge.

“I am impressed with the amount of food donated in one hour. It will certainly help feed a lot of people … and it is a blessing,” said Jim Scrivener, a Food Bank representative. “We are very appreciative and thankful for Liberty’s contribution.”

The food drive was organized through Liberty’s Center for Christian/Community Service.

Students also collected 200 pounds of food this month at Reber-Thomas Dining Hall, to be distributed in Danville, Va.

Freshman Helen Doolittle, a member of the Liberty Women’s Field Hockey Team said her teammates gathered food for the food drive.

“I think it’s an awesome cause during Thanksgiving time,” Doolittle said. “[it’s important to] think of others by giving them food, especially those who don’t have any.”
