Carson Wentz, Lou Holtz coming to Convocation

Generations of sports fans will collide next week at Liberty University when legendary football head coach Lou Holtz comes to Convocation Wednesday, Feb. 19, followed by Super Bowl champion and current Philadelphia Eagles starting quarterback Carson Wentz Friday, Feb. 21.

Holtz is the only college football head coach to take six different programs to bowl appearances, while also leading four different universities to top 20 rankings by the end of the season. He is best known for his 1988 season as the sideline general for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, in which the football icon led his squad to a perfect 12-0 record that was capped by a Fiesta Bowl victory. The season resulted in Notre Dame being named National Champions of the college football world. Following his coaching career, Holtz was an ESPN college football analyst.

Prior to becoming the face of Philadelphia, Wentz was a part of five consecutive FCS National Championships at North Dakota State. He was then selected second overall in the 2016 NFL draft and was immediately named the Eagles starter for the 2016 campaign. The following season, Wentz was on pace for an MVP caliber year before tearing his ACL in Week 14. The Eagles continued to show resilience behind backup quarterback and former Liberty Online master’s student Nick Foles, concluding the 2017 season with a 41-33 Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots. Despite battling multiple injuries over the course of his four-year professional football career, Wentz is one of the NFL’s finest talents.

Both Holtz and Wentz serve as an inspiration to Christians worldwide as they prove that followers of Jesus can reach the pinnacle of the sporting world while remaining true to their convictions.

On Feb. 21, Wentz is also expected to partner with Liberty to feed the hungry in Haiti. Liberty’s LU Serve office will offer one-hour time slots for students to volunteer to pack meals for Haiti through Mission of Hope, and Wentz will be working alongside the students as they aim to pack 200,000 meals by the end of the day. The event will be held in the LaHaye Multi-Purpose Center. Registration is required; text MEALPACK to 24502 for more information.
