Baseball wins ASUN championship, seals bid to NCAA Regional

Liberty University’s baseball team clinched its sixth NCAA Tournament berth on Sunday after winning the ASUN Championship. The second-seeded Flames (42-19) raced out to a 4-0 advantage and then held off a charge by sixth-seeded, defending tournament champion Stetson University for a 4-3 victory on the Hatters’ home field in DeLand, Fla.

Liberty, which dealt Stetson its first loss of the tournament on Saturday to force Sunday’s final, scored four runs in the second inning before the Hatters (27-32) put the tying run on third base with two out in the ninth. Flames closer Evan Brabrand retired the next batter to seal the win after starting pitcher Andrew McInvale tossed six scoreless innings to record the victory.

Catcher Jonathan Embry, the ASUN Conference Player of the Year, was named the ASUN Baseball Championship MVP. He was joined by four teammates — outfielder Gray Betts, McInvale, shortstop Cam Locklear, and outfielder Brandon Rohrer — on the All-Tournament team.

The Flames will find out their destination and first-round opponent for the May 30-June 2 NCAA Regionals on Monday when the brackets are announced at noon on ESPNU.
